[15:55:24]<chaz>is there a function similar to provision_apache_config_vhost_config() to read a value from a site's vhost?

[16:12:36]* deciphered has joined #aegir
[16:19:54]* cYrilD has joined #aegir
[16:20:29]<mig5>no.. we don't do any parsing of vhosts
[16:20:42]<chaz>ah,
[16:23:34]<chaz>if I want to view/change a variable for a site in the site edit form (I'm looking at the cheesy module as start) how can I get the result/equivalent of "drush vget"?
[16:24:08]<chaz>we have a custom template that has 2-3 color choices for background color, and I want to view/change that color.
[16:24:37]<chaz>We have lots of sites using 1 of 3 templates, each with 2-3 color scheme choices.
[16:25:12]<chaz>I want to be able to edit a site and change its color based on a dropdown/radio that should read/change the variable.
[16:26:06]<chaz>I wanted to know if the vhost file could be parsed to get the site's dbname so I could run a select query against the variable table to read/write that color value.
[16:28:06]<chaz>but if aegir steers clear of that, what options are there for discovering a site's dbname?
[16:29:47]<mig5>you can't, from the UI
[16:30:00]<chaz>ah
[16:30:09]<mig5>you'd have to use the site's alias and query drush for the db name
[16:30:42]<chaz>can that be done within a module that can affect the aegir forms?
[16:31:54]<chaz>presently, we log onto the site, and via admin- change the template/color. But we wanted to know if it could be done at the aegir level.
[16:34:41]<mig5>you could look up the drush alias name (we call it the 'context' name) using hosting_context_name($nid)
[16:34:46]<mig5>http://api.aegirproject.org/api/Hostmaster/modules--hosting--hosting.mod...
[16:35:00]<mig5>and then you could execute a drush @$site vget or whatever
[16:35:10]<mig5>i haven't done it, and it feels.. ugly :)
[16:35:34]<mig5>i don't like the idea of doing $foobar to a site without running through a proper task that backs up the site, is able to roll back the change, etc
[16:35:43]<mig5>but i remember darthsteven talking about this: http://community.aegirproject.org/node/224
[16:35:51]<mig5>not sure if he ever wrote a contrib module or what
[16:38:36]<chaz>would it be a safer solution to create a whole new task for template changing that backsup a site first, then changes the template/color?
[16:39:08]<chaz>could I write a task to change the template that calls the backup task first?
[16:41:13]<mig5>yep
[16:41:42]<mig5>others argue that running an entire task for something so simple, is overkill
[16:41:49]<mig5>they may be right! :)
[16:41:53]<chaz>would that be a 'cleaner' more proper way of performing a task on specific site?
[16:41:54]<mig5>so go with what feels right
[16:42:00]<mig5>in my opinion: yes
[16:42:12]<chaz>not messing up 180+ client sites is 'right' :+)
[16:42:50]<mig5>you could use something like the backup task as an example: as it's a task that allows you to enter a text field (backup name) - that could be your variable
[16:43:05]<mig5>then you go to the provision backend and write your matching provision command that invokes provision-backup first, etc
[16:43:38]<chaz>excellent
[16:44:44]<chaz>is the backup task a good task to look at for learning how to create tasks?
[16:46:12]<mig5>yes, or the Reset Login task
[16:46:28]<mig5>but i suggested the backup task mainly because it's got a text field option attached to it, which might be a good starting point
[16:47:05]<chaz>is there an 'aegir' way to call the drush @$site command within a module?
[16:47:25]<mig5>well - if it's task, it automatically *becomes* such a command
[16:47:56]<mig5>the hosting task sends it to provision and it 'becomes' drush @$site provision-$yourtask
[16:48:05]<chaz>ahah
[16:48:20]<mig5>so at that point, you can bootstrap the site in your provision function and run your variable_set or whatever you want
[16:48:29]<chaz>great
[16:48:33]<chaz>thanks so much!
[16:49:58]<mig5>you may have to store the variable you're changing, in the aegir database - like the cheesy profile tutorial does
[16:50:46]<chaz>as opposed to reading/writing from the site's variable table?
[16:51:24]<mig5>i mean that you may need to store it in the aegir db so that the task can retrieve it and send it to the backend saying 'make *this* the new variable'
[16:51:33]<mig5>it really is rather cumbersome :s
[16:51:41]<chaz>so, it could be temporary?
[16:54:59]<mig5>not really
[16:55:02]<mig5>hum
[16:55:31]<mig5>i really don't know the best way of doing this. or rather: this is why aegir isn't built to be a bulk GUI for making direct changes to site DB content
[16:55:49]<mig5>it's really more a deployment tool
[16:55:53]<chaz>where is the code/dir for tasks, like the backup task?
[16:56:13]<mig5>in profiles/hostmaster/hosting/task, and profiles/hostmaster/hosting/site
[16:56:23]<chaz>yeah, as s deployment tool it definitely does rock.
[16:56:35]<chaz>ah, thanks
