[01:32:14]<v20th>hi! can somebody help me with fresh aegir installation on ubuntu 16.04?
[01:32:33]<v20th>I can't get past the pesky "Could not find the alias @hostmaster" message :(
[01:33:57]<v20th>I've tried package and manual installation, secure/insecure/no-password mysql setup, different network configuration, older drush and aegir versions, but it always dies with the same message
[01:34:31]<v20th>I'm starting to think that might be a bug in aegir…

[02:00:24]<bgm>v20th: can you start from scratch, delete /var/aegir/.drush/, and re-install with the Debian packages?
[02:00:31]<bgm>(this is Aegir 3.9 ?)
[02:04:37]<v20th>bgm, I'm running it in Vagrant, so I completely destroy the machine every time, so it is always a clean install
[02:04:37]* v20th has quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[02:04:53]* v20th has joined #aegir
[02:05:12]<bgm>v20th: hmm ok, could you pastebin a full log of the installation?
[02:05:25]<bgm>(console output when doing apt-get install)
[02:05:52]<v20th>bgm, sure, just a moment
[02:06:27]* noecc has quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[02:17:36]<bgm>v20th: usually that kind of bug is a symptom of something else, but just in case, you can also check to see if you have either: /var/aegir/.drush/hm.alias.drushrc.php or hostmaster.alias.drushrc.php
[02:17:53]<v20th>bgm, http://pastebin.com/CcBVyGHd
[02:18:17]<v20th>no I don't have those files
[02:19:18]<v20th>how does the @hostmaster alias get created anyway? I can't find the exact place in the source where the alias file would be written to disk
[02:21:16]<bgm>v20th: i work mostly on civicrm support in aegir, I'm not too familiar with those parts
[02:21:25]* oluabbeys has quit (Quit: oluabbeys)
[02:22:05]<bgm>there are Drushrc classes, but not too sure for the hostmaster alias itself
[02:23:23]<bgm>in /usr/share/drush/commands/provision/install.hostmaster.inc
[02:24:28]<bgm>v20th: other aliases are in /var/aegir/.drush ? ex: server_master.alias.drushrc.php?
[02:24:47]<v20th>bgm, you mean this part? $site_name = '@hostmaster'; drush_invoke_process('@none', "provision-save", array($site_name), array(
[02:24:58]<bgm>you could probably get more verbose output by installing manually with "drush [...] --debug"
[02:25:02]<bgm>v20th: yep
[02:25:22]<bgm>the only thing i see in the pastebin, is that the hostname is set to localhost
[02:25:31]<bgm>and that can be a source of bugs sometimes
[02:26:28]<v20th>tried with aegir.test.local hostname as well, the same result
[02:27:03]<v20th>in /var/aegir/.drush/ i've got only platform_hostmaster.alias.drushrc.php server_master.alias.drushrc.php
[02:27:04]* noecc has joined #aegir
[02:27:13]<bgm>http://docs.aegirproject.org/en/3.x/install/#a-fully-qualified-domain-na...
[02:27:31]<bgm>I don't know why, but the guide still has that requirement, so there may still be issues with that. I don't know.
[02:28:37]<v20th>bgm, ok, let me rerun the install with something that resembles a FQDN
[02:29:08]<bgm>if you're on IPv6, you can assign an IP/real-fqdn to your VM :)
[02:29:22]<bgm>(that's what I usually do, yay ipv6)
[02:30:09]<v20th>bgm, can you point me to some doc how can i do that?..
[02:30:17]<bgm>otherwise maybe test on a 5$ droplet or other cheap throwaway hosting. I know a few folks use Vagrant, notably ergonlogic (project lead).
[02:30:41]<bgm>.. but otherwise not sure what other leads to suggest
[02:30:55]* boshtian has quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[02:31:07]<bgm>v20th: depends on your network, but if you bridge the network interface, instead of NAT, it should get an IP automatically?
[02:32:58]<bgm>v20th: if you're not too familiar with networking/routing, I don't want to send you off-track. Throwing 5$ at a cheap VM in order to test the install, rather than spend hours debugging a dead end, might be more efficient :/
[02:33:37]<bgm>also keep in mind I'm mostly an Aegir user and third-party contributor. Maybe someone else here will have other suggestions :)
[02:35:17]<v20th>bgm, ok, thanks. I'll research more on the topic of FQDN on ipv6 later. right now I need to set it up only on my local machine on a private network

[02:53:07]<joestewart>v20th: two things. Are you installing php7 gd ( which installs the xml extension too)? This was causing me the same issue. Also there is some mariadb info about the root pw here: https://www.drupal.org/node/2770819
[02:53:08]<hefring>https://www.drupal.org/node/2770819 => Install fails on MariaDB 10 without password (new default) [#2770819] => 10 comments, 5 IRC mentions
[02:53:56]<joestewart>Also the "Could not find the alias @hostmaster" message seems to be more a symptom of a previous failure in hostmaster install.
[02:54:30]<v20th>well it is not a very helpful message then..
[02:54:44]<v20th>joestewart, yes gd is installed
[02:55:02]<v20th>and the password thing, mysql_secure_installation actually takes care of that
[02:55:23]<joestewart>oh well.
[03:00:17]<v20th>argh I think i've got it... looks like the reason was the postfix configuration

[03:17:17]<v20th>yes, I've been selecting 'No configuration' in postfix config popup and it fails because of that. and if I select 'Local only' installation is able to succeed

[03:52:13]<v20th>does anyone else think it would be good to include it in the troube-shouting section in the install doc as well? :) http://docs.aegirproject.org/en/3.x/install/#installation-trouble-shooting

[04:29:41]<bgm>v20th: indeed, definitely should be part of the "install" requirements, imho
[04:30:23]<bgm>I had forgotten, but I've had issues in the past where, if the /etc/mailname was incorrect, it would fail the install.
[04:31:01]<bgm>https://github.com/coopsymbiotic/coopsymbiotic-ansible/blob/master/roles... :/
[04:35:21]<bgm>offtopic: on a server, cron isn't running on site. I have "hosting-queued" running, hosting-dispatch, and my queues seem correctly configured. The core cron queue says it is running regularly ("last run: 30 seconds ago")
[04:36:09]<bgm>the site node says "cron run: never", and same for the civicrm cron, which runs on its own queue independantly.
[04:36:12]<bgm>any ideas?

[05:39:10]<colan>adding to a troubleshooting section is a great idea.
[05:40:02]<colan>i've never run into this issue installing the debian package on 16.04, which I do all the time, but i always have a postfix set up in advance (as an "Internet site" / real mail server)
[05:41:15]* colan goes to put this in the ticket.
[05:42:59]<v20th>where is the source of debian packages that are here - http://debian.aegirproject.org/ ?
[05:43:32]<v20th>I want to try to add some sensible environment checks
